Winter weather did not slow the OWLs down one bit in February. Our potluck was very well attended by both OWLs and Lenten worshipers. The food was plentiful and fantastic. Thank you to all who contributed. We will once again host lunch for Lenten worshipers at the March potluck.

The OWLs braved the cold for two very nice events in January. Many of us traveled to Winona for a fun day of lunch and a visit to the Minnesota Marine Art Museum. We are blessed to have such a fabulous art collection so close by. The potluck was a rousing success with 32 of us attending Pastor Karyn’s educational and inspiring presentation on the trip to Israel.

OWLs Post for November 2015
October was a very musical month for the OWLs with our outing to the Heider Center and potluck. We will conclude our musical theme with a musical theatre outing in November. Last year we had several exciting Friday night out adventures during the winter. We will start that again in November. On Friday, November 6 we will attend the La Crosse Community Theatre production of the “The Little Mermaid.” This is a musical play that is guaranteed to please all ages. It is based on the Hans Christian Andersen story and the Disney movie of the same name. Before the theater we will dine in a local restaurant. Cost of the theater is $29, and dinner is on your own. You can pay Brian on the day of the event. For a great Friday night out, meet at the church at 4:30 PM on Friday, November 6. Please call 608.526.9700 or email Brian.

We got things warmed up in August, and the fun will continue in September. We will start the month with our potluck on Wednesday, September 16, at noon. But take note!!! To change things up a bit, we will have the potluck at Mary and Brian Narveson’s house. We are hoping for a warm fall day where everyone can gather on the deck for fresh air and fun. In case of bad weather, we will gather in the house. Our program will be musical games.
OWLs Post for August 2015
The OWLs took the month of July off for vacation travel, family gatherings and summer fun. Hope everyone had a great July. At the end of June our monthly outing took us to Elmer’s Auto and Toy Museum in Fountain City. We had a great day looking at beautiful classic cars and a fantastic toy collection with what has to be one of the largest collections of pedal cars in the country. The museum and ice cream at the Narveson’s made for a great day.

May and June were great fun for the OWLs. Our May trip on the Winona Trolley and visit to Pickwick Mill was fun and educational for all. The photos were taken at Pickwick Mill, one of the oldest surviving flour mills in Minnesota. The water wheel really works!
The OWLs will be taking July off for vacation fun and summer outings. Our next meeting will be our August Potluck on Wednesday, August 5th at noon.
OWLs' Post for June 2015
May got us off to good warm weather start with our trip to Winona on the trolley and a fun potluck showing old photographs and telling stories of summers past. A good time and great food was had by all.
We will kick off June with the Potluck one week earlier than usual. Out potluck will be held on Wednesday June 10th, at noon in the fellowship hall. Our speaker for the program will be Gerald (Jerry) Bonsack a well-known photographer and Environmental Engineer in our area. Jerry recently returned from a cruise to Alaska where he used some exciting new photographic techniques to capture the glaciers and landscapes of the Alaskan cruise. If you are a photographer you will be interested in the techniques Jerry uses to capture the images in his program. If you are a travel enthusiast you can just sit back and enjoy the view with Jerry’s interesting insights. We will meet in the fellowship hall so we can view the presentation of the large screen.
OWLs Post for May 2015
The OWLs took advantage of the warm weather in April to make the drive to Sugar Creek for “Yesterday’s Youth.” We heard a great program by Dick Iverson about his travels with Habitat for Humanity. Dick took us to Portugal, Costa Rica and Nepal. We also enjoyed a nice lunch and musical program. The attached photo is of some of the group on the deck. The sun was shining, and the ride down and back along the river was beautiful, with many eagles sighted. For our potluck we enjoyed good food and a fun interactive discussion with Aliyah Richling about her teaching experiences at UWL…

The OWLs March began with an exciting trip to the International Festival of Owls in Houston, Minnesota. Many of us got up early on a Saturday morning to experience a day of owls. We saw a very interesting program featuring a number of live rescue owls, learned about the owl art now on display around the town of Houston. Had an owl-themed lunch, saw a video on the Italian owls festival and bought owl souvenirs. You could easily say the day was a hoot….

The OWLs are a hearty bunch. In spite of subzero temperature, we gathered for our potluck on Ash Wednesday. Thanks to everyone who brought extra food to help feed the mid-day worshipers. After a fantastic lunch, we had a fun time learning about each other’s heritage. We found a great number of us are from Norwegian descent, but we also have a few Germans and some from England. A great time was had by all… just see the photos on the left!
For March we hope for warmer weather as we leave the confines of La Crosse for our outing. We will travel to Houston, Minnesota, on Saturday, March 7, to visit the International Owls Festival.
OWLs Posting for February 2015
In spite of cold and snow the OWLs had a very enjoyable January. Our outing to the Johnsmith concert at the Pump House preceded by dinner at the Waterford provided much warmth, laughter and good music during our Friday Night Out. Our potluck with speaker Rob Wessler presenting his experiences in China was fun and informative.
In February our theme will be history and heritage. Our first event is our potluck which will be on Ash Wednesday, February 18 at noon in the narthex. As we have done in the past we will provide lunch to Lenten worshipers after the morning service. Please bring some extra food to share. For our program we will once again turn to ourselves and have an opportunity to get to know each other better through our stories. Our theme is history and heritage. We all come from different backgrounds and national heritages. Please come prepared to tell a little about yourself and your family heritage. Each person will have about five minutes to share memories, show family artifacts or simply tell a story about their youth or ancestors. If you know some of your family genealogy and would like to share, that is fine too. As always, you can sit and listen if you prefer not to share.

The OWLs did not let the cold of December slow them down. We started the month with a great day at Sugar Creek, including a Scandinavian lunch complete with lefse. The afternoon musical program was lively and entertaining. Our Christmas potluck was a feast to behold with great food and many Christmas goodies, followed by a spirited competition of Christmas trivia and guess the carol. The holiday spirit was further enhanced with the many beautiful Christmas sweaters worn to the event (see photo). Fun was had by all.

It started with a great dinner at the Westview Inn and ended with a fun Las Vegas style show featuring the “Phat Pack” at the Heider Center in West Salem. A great time was had by all....
OWLs Post for November 2014
October has been a month of mild temperatures and beautiful color. The OWL’s took full advantage of both with our trip to Sugar Creek for “Yesterday’s Youth” where we listened to fascinating presentations on the building of the Alaskan Highway and the Battle of Midway, followed by a fun afternoon with Laughing Laura. Our October potluck featured Ron Nowland and his wife Frieda presenting a great program on Michigan Lighthouses which was personalized with stories of Ron’s father in the light house service on Lake Michigan.
However, just because it’s getting cooler does not mean the OWL’s are hibernating for the winter. We will start November with a Friday Night Out.
