Welcome to Pastor Mark Carr

This Sunday we extend a warm welcome to Pastor Mark Carr as he returns to First as our guest preacher.

Prayer Chain

Prayer is one of the most universal expressions of our faith, of the faith of many people. As we begin to build an intentional prayer ministry here at First, we will create a visual representation of our prayers in the sanctuary. You are encouraged to fill out one of the prayer request slips you were handed as you came in and place them in the offering plate. A small team of people will be praying through our requests, and in a few weeks, we will see these different requests together in a chain, a visible sign of our needs, our trust and our community.

Flowers in the sanctuary are in honor of Lowell & Mary Meier’s 59th wedding anniversary

Baptismal blessings are extended to Matthew Robert Wolfe, son of Justin & Andrea Wolfe

Little LEAPs

This group is for children ages birth to 3 years old and their parents/guardians. We meet the last Sunday of the month, at 9:15am in room 102. We sing, dance, play and pray together. We welcome newcomers all the time — join us THIS SUNDAY, August 28

VeggieTales

Only a few more silly Sundays left! Children ages 3 (and potty-trained) through grade 5 can still spend time together on Sundays at 9:15am with an episode of Veggie Tales.

NEWSLETTER ASSEMBLY

It’s a relaxing way to volunteer! Join us on Monday, August 29, at 9am, to assemble the September newsletter. See you there!

Blessing of the Backpacks

Youths and adults: Bring your backpacks, briefcases, messenger bags, purses, etc. to church on Sunday, September 11, so that we may bless the start of your new school year!

Rally Sunday

Sunday School at First Lutheran kicks off with registration on Sunday, September 11, from 9:15-10:15am in the sanctuary. Parents and students need to register and will meet the teachers, receive information, and get the ball rolling for an awesome Sunday School year.

High School Praise Band

Informational meeting for those interested in joining a modern, upbeat, Christian music band: Sunday, Sept. 11, 5pm, in the sanctuary.

OWLs

The OWLs, a group for those 55+, are flying to see “Pride’s Crossing” at the Commonweal Theatre in Lanesboro, MN; a thoughtful and enticing play about the life of the first woman to swim the English Channel. The NY Post declared it “a play you will remember and cherish forever”. Leaving church at 4pm on Thursday, September 15. Cost: $35, dinner on your own. RSVP to owls@firstlu.org by Tuesday, September 13.

Middle School Milestone

At First Lutheran we are deeply committed to bringing the presence of God into the lives of children everywhere they go. This life milestone is for sixth-graders and their parents/guardians as they transition from elementary to middle school, and celebrates that each child is made in the image of God. We spend our time in four weeks talking about being created in the image of God, how God is in the midst of change and ways that we can feel connected with God through spiritual practices. Week one starts Sunday, Sept. 18, 9:15am in the fellowship hall.

First Fest

On Sunday, September 18, 11:30am-1:30pm we invite you to join us and relax, catch up with friends, introduce yourself to visitors or even members you’ve yet to meet, listen to some great music, have lunch, and have some fun!

LWR school kits

We have collected enough school supplies to fill the 77 school bags we have. We could use monetary donations so we can buy more school bags as more school supplies come in.

We’re Hiring!

First Lutheran is seeking a part-time nursery attendant for kids younger than 5. Times might include Sunday mornings, but will mostly be for occasional evenings. Call 608.783.2236 for more info.

First Lutheran is searching for an assistant custodian; approximately 8 hrs/wk. Under the direction and supervision of our lead custodian, this person is generally responsible for regular light cleaning, but could also assist with maintenance and grounds work as necessary. A full job description is available in the church office.

Alma Disaster Relief

On August 11, Alma and the surrounding area received 8–12” of rain in less than 6 hours. Much of the damage was caused by moving earth and debris, something not covered by many homeowner’s insurance policies. St John Lutheran in Alma is working with emergency services, banks and other churches to help those in need. If you would like to help, the best way is give money, which will be sent to St John’s disaster relief fund. Make out your check to First Lutheran and put “St. John” in the memo line, or give at 1stlu.org/give.

Sermon Notes & Audio

Sermon notes are available from ushers during worship; they are also available online, along with the sermon audio, at 1stlu.org/sermons. Sermon notes are meant to be used…

  • During worship to write down things you hear that surprise, shock, or otherwise strike a chord with you.
  • At home, to think about what you heard during the sermon and what it means to you, in your life, right now.
  • In small groups, to share your thoughts and to listen to others talk about how they heard the sermon and were moved by it.
