Dear First Lutheran,
It is now four years ago that I last visited the Holy Land, leading a group of 18 from a variety of congregations across the midwest, including ten from the La Crosse area. Since then we have had a chance to tell others about the trip and have encouraged many to visit Israel and Palestine. It has been my experience over the years that people often say they would like to visit the Holy Land but are afraid to because of the conflict, or now because of COVID-19. Many also say they don't think they can afford it.
I invite you to join me in setting aside one hour to participate in a virtual tour of Jerusalem next Wednesday, Sept 29 from 10–11am. I will be participating in a Virtual Tour of Jerusalem and the surrounding Palestinian neighborhoods of Silwan and Sheik Jarrah. This unique tour is available through the Churches for Middle East Peace (CMEP). CMEP's intent is to provide income generating opportunities for tour guides in the Holy Land at a time when tourism has plummeted in the wake of COVID-19.
Due to our synod's support of CMEP as a sponsoring organization, and my role as a CMEP Regional Coordinator, we are able to participate in this unique travel experience live with a Palestinian tour guide, for the discounted price of $20 per person. It would be great if you and a few folks from First Lutheran could join me.
Shalom/Salam/Peace,
Pastor Kent
Join CMEP and MEJDI Tours for an insider’s look at Jerusalem, leading you through the history and current politics of the Holy City. We’ll travel virtually through the City of David, Silwan, and Sheikh Jarrah. This tour will take you through the neighborhood of Silwan, starting with the relevant background and sharing the local narratives. This is an in-depth opportunity to view, learn, and discuss with your live guide. CMEP staff will be present to talk about current events and advocacy opportunities related to the Holy Land.
This tour is designed in cooperation with Ir Amim, an NGO working for an equitable and stable Jerusalem with an agreed political future. This tour includes viewing 360 pictures, videos, and maps with a live guide who can answer your questions. You are sure to leave with a better understanding of current situations in the Holy City.
For excellent background information on the long struggle in Sheikh Jarrah, participants are encouraged to watch a 25 minute film: My Neighborhood.
Cost: The recommended donation is $45. However, anyone working with Pastor Kent Johnson, CMEP Regional Coordinator, can register directly on the website for the $25 price. That option is on the registration page without a special code. If you are planning to attend, please contact Pastor Kent at pastorkentj@gmail.com. (NOTE: If we have 25 people to register, each person can register using the same $25 ticket on the site and then entering discount code "RC20" to get $5 off.)
