Green Team Update for August 2019

Did you know????

In 1993 the ELCA passed a social statement entitled “Caring for Creation: Vision, Hope & Leadership”.  In it, it’s explains:

ELCA’s teachings on ecology and the environment, grounded in a biblical vision of God's intention for the healing and wholeness of creation. This statement provides a Christian understanding of the human role to serve in creation, and a hope rooted in God’s faithfulness to the creation from which humans emerge and depend upon for sustaining life. It provides a framework for understanding the human role in creation, the problem of sin and the current environmental crisis.

Caring for Creation expresses a call to pursue justice for creation through active participation, solidarity, sufficiency and sustainability, and states the commitments of the ELCA for pursuing wholeness for creation — commitments expressed through individual and community action, worship, learning, moral deliberation and advocacy.

First Lutheran’s newly formed Green Team has committed to supporting this social statement by establishing green practices within our church walls and beyond.  In addition, we are excited to engage in community activities that encourage being good stewards of our land.  Some of the projects you can expect in the future are:

  1. Roadside Clean-Up

  2. Zero Waste Coffee Hour

  3. Designating a “Walk/Ride/Carpool” to church day

  4. Volunteering at Clearwater Farm

  5. Park Clean-Up

  6. Rain Garden

  7. Solar Panels

Of course, the possibilities are endless! We are excited about all the many ways we can pursue wholeness for Creation!  This is an intergenerational group, so ALL ages are welcome -- we’d love to see you at our next meeting (date to be announced)!

The earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship. We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by future generations.
— Pope John Paul II
