Family Photos: a Cloud of Witnesses

We ask for photographs of your beloved dead so that we can be surrounded by their witness on All Saints Day. These pictures may be sent electronically (karyn@firstlu.org) or brought in. They will be printed as 4x6, so resolution should be such that they can be printed well from what you submit. If your loved one was a member of our congregation and died this past year, you received a letter from Pastor Karyn with a special request. Please note, we will continue to use the photos submitted last year, so no need to resend those photos.

Special All Saints Worship This Wed

On Wednesday, Nov. 1, we will honor our brother and sisters in Christ who have gone before us at worship at 6:15pm, and during an additional morning service at 11am. The 11am service will be followed by a light lunch at noon.

Parent Share: Now meeting Sun & Tues

Join Carla Stanton, member of First, certified spiritual director and mom of three, in room 201 every Tuesday morning, 8:30-9:30am, or on Sunday mornings 9:15am-10:45am. At Parent Share, we pray and talk about raising our children faithfully. Childcare is available, too, during either session. This group is for parents/guardians and their children ages birth to 3 years old, and meets the last Sunday, at 9:15am in room 102. We sing, dance, play, and pray together to learn ways to raise our little Christians in the home. We have time with the kids and time with just the adults. During the adult time, volunteers come in and play with our children as we talk. We welcome newcomers all the time — join us!

Grief Support

Carrying on after the death of a loved one can be difficult and lonely. Join with others who have experienced loss, and listen and care for each other. Two groups to choose from, both meeting the first Thursday of the month:

  • 1pm in the Upper Rm, led by Nancy Beguin
  • 7pm at Gloria Kubiak’s home; call Gloria at 608.498.2762 if interested in joining

Change Those Clocks!

Daylight Savings ends next Saturday, so make certain to set your clocks back one hour. But if you forget, don’t worry… you’ll just be early for church!

Art and Spirituality Retreat in Chicago

Join Pr Karyn to learn and practice Visio Divina, the spiritual practice of praying with images. The group will visit the Art Institute in Chicago and other sites, and there will be some free time to shop, sightsee or rest. Traveling by van, the group will leave Friday morning, Nov. 17, returning to Onalaska Saturday evening. Cost includes transportation to Chicago, hotel and Art Institute entrance fee. Contact Bridget Crave with questions: bridget@firstlu.org. More info & reg. at 1stlu.org/artic.

Peer Ministry Starts Wed, Nov. 8

Peer Ministry is a great way for our 10th-graders to learn about how to deal with any situation that arises, large or small. It makes handling conflicts simple and equips them to be better listeners and be welcoming to those around them. Meeting most Wednesdays from 6:30-8pm (with a meal provided at 6pm for those who can make it).

Martin Luther Movie

Have you missed out on the new Martin Luther movie? Return to Grace is very similar, and is showing at the La Crosse Marcus Theater at 10am & 7pm on Oct. 30. More info: 1stlu.org/luthermovie

Thanksgiving Eve Worship

In place of our usual worship on Wednesday, Nov. 22, members of First are invited to join in a special, ecumenical worship service that Thanksgiving Eve at 7pm, at Onalaska United Methodist, 212 4th Ave. North.

Advent Around the Table

Advent is a season full of rich traditions for both home and church. We invite all members of First Lutheran to join us on Sunday, November 26 at 9:15am in Fellowship Hall for our annual Advent Around the Table event. We will gather to create advent wreaths for our homes, chrismons for our trees, peace cranes for our sanctuary and advent calendars to help us keep the days of Advent. Along the way we will learn more about this particular season, have great fellowship and grow in our faith as we kick off the Advent season.

Kettle Ringers

Tis the season! Bellringers are needed through December 24. Bell ringing can be done in 2-hour increments, inside or outside. This is also a great opportunity for our confirmation kids to gain some service hours—and do it together! Those interested in volunteering their time during the holidays—or anytime—through the Salvation Army, please check out the Salvation Army’s website or sign up online at Bells2ring.org!

Food Basket Needs

The following items have been requested to fill the food basket for those in need: pork & beans, rice, Hamburger Helper, ravioli, canned chicken, canned tuna, peanut butter.

Clothes Closet is Full

THANK YOU to all of our generous donors! You have filled the First Teen Clothes Closet — and we do mean FILLED! At the moment, we aren’t accepting additional clothing donations for our closet. Instead, we encourage you to pass items along to the Salvation Army, Goodwill or another charity that can put them to use. We are still collecting, however, for our friends at the Children’s Clothes Closet in La Crosse, which can especially use larger children’s sizes (10-16). Those donations may be left in our bins in the entrance at First Lutheran Church.

Snow Birds: Keep Us Updated

Had enough of snow already and about to winter in warmer climes? Keep us up to date by letting us know your winter address / contact info. Contact the church office with your updated information: office@firstlu.org / 608.783.2236. Thanks!
