Your generosity will reach and lift up families living in some of the harshest, most remote locations, facing famine in one of the driest regions of the world.

Faith Alive! U: Reconciling in Christ; what other congregations have learned

In October 2019, Pr. Libby Howe led our Faith Alive U! talking about how our congregation can become a voice of unapologetic welcome, a community of blessing and inclusion, and a public advocate for justice alongside our LGBTQIA friends and neighbors. We asked for volunteers to lead First Lutheran in the process to becoming a Reconciling in Christ (RIC) congregation. Just as the team was gathering, Covid-19 struck, and our RIC activity never really got started. It's time for the restart. Join us Sunday, Jan. 10 at 6pm for an interactive conversation by ReconcilingWorks executive director, Aubrey Thonvold, about what it means to be a Reconciling in Christ Congregation. Together we will learn about the importance people of faith and the church have in supporting, caring for, and celebrating people of all sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expressions. This will be a great time to bring your questions and an open heart and mind. This event is intended for confirmation students, high schoolers and all adults. To join the Zoom meeting go to the event page at 1stlu.org/FAUzoom.

Read 1 Kings in 12 Days!

What was the downfall of Israel? The overall storyline in Kings says that Israel’s people sinned, especially their kings, and in turn were punished. What if Israel in its exile were to cry out to or turn to the Lord? Would they be delivered? Pastor Stanton will be introducing this book to Bible Readers starting Wednesday, Jan. 13. Join at any time! These studies are for ANYone who can read, 3rd graders to our eldest friend; members and acquaintances far far away. Use whatever Bible you’d like! Follow Pastor Stanton’s daily guides on Facebook or YouTube, and if you’d like the daily video guides emailed to you contact Pastor Stanton at jason@firstlu.org.

Watch the three YAGM videos here:

21-Day Racial Equity Challenge

Fighting racism isn’t a one and done event, it’s an ongoing process. It takes about 3 weeks to form a new habit, so Dr. Eddie Moor, Dr. Marguerite Penick-Parks and Debby Irving developed the 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge to help all of us develop self-awareness and intentionality to effect social change. A year ago, many of us read Debby Irving’s book Waking Up White and some participated in small group discussions during Lent. Whether you were part of that book read, or not, you are invited to be a part of the 21-day challenge. Starting Jan. 18, for 21 days you will be invited to either watch a short video, or listen to a podcast, or read an article and reflect. The entire schedule, with links to each day’s resources, will be posted on our website and daily reminders will be posted on Facebook. The 21-day challenge is appropriate for teens and all adults. Whether you are a seasoned anti-racist ally, or the whole topic of racism just makes you uncomfortable, this 21-Day Challenge is for you. We hope you’ll join us.

Baptismal Preparation

The pastors are considering baptisms on an individual basis. The next baptism preparation session will be Saturday, Feb. 5, at 10am. To register or ask questions contact the church office at 608.783.3326 / office@firstlu.org.

Keep Up with Changes: Update Your Contact Info

Make sure the office has your current contact info, including current address, mobile number(s), carrier info (for reminders by text), and email(s). Send to office@firstlu.org.

Morning Musings

Where is God in all this? Who/what shall we pray for today? What are our questions? What is grounding us in a time when everything is shifting? Go to First Lutheran's website, Facebook page or our Youtube channel where each morning, Monday through Saturday by 8am, Pastor Stanton or Pastor Karyn post a "morning musing". It's a great way to stay connected!
