Faith Alive Creative Circle

KEEP CALM AND TRUST JESUS

Saturday May 20, 9-11am. This will be an enjoyable, relaxing and interactive class that will teach you ways to strengthen and trust in the power of your faith as well as tips to stay calm in a world that is often stressful and rushed! The class will look at specific, simple and healthy ways to deal with stress and help in relaxation. The class will be taught by Marlene Dewald, RN, who retired in 2012. Her nursing background is in public health, home health, maternal-child health and pediatrics. She has experience and great interest in integrative health practices. Sign-up at 1stlu.org/keepcalm.

COME FOR SUPPER

First Lutheran helps at Come for Supper at Our Savior’s in La Crosse on the fourth Tuesday of every odd month, so we’ll be assisting next on Tuesday, May 23. First Lutheran will help with food donations and volunteering to serve and clean up. The sign-up sheets are at the Welcome Center. Call Gloria Kubiak if you have questions, 608.498.2762.

Young Youth Events

Young Youth, for grades 2-5, will volunteer at Clearwater Farms on Tuesday, May 23, at 4pm. The kids will have opportunities to work with the animals and in their garden. Kids should wear closed-toe shoes, bug spray and old clothes that they can get dirty, and they should bring water bottles. The farm supplies gardening gloves and requires a signed waiver/release.

Then the very next day, on Wednesday, May 24, at 4:30pm, Young Youth will assemble Blessing Bags in room 203. The bags went so fast last time that we hope to make more so that we can help meet the need in our community. Donations of items for the bags are appreciated; see insert for details!

Confirmation Celebration

For all confirmation students, small group guides and parents. Wednesday, May 24, 6-7:30pm, at Rowe Park.

Aliyah reports for duty

Aliyah Richling is in basic training and would greatly appreciate any words of encouragement we can muster! But the only way to do so is through the ancient snail mail method. Use this address to offer your support:

You’d Look Great in a Red Vest!

The synod needs volunteers for the Synod Assembly, June 9-11, held in La Crosse this year. Aside from wearing red vests, volunteers play an important role in making the assembly run smoothly, starting with registration on Friday evening and throughout the Saturday and Sunday sessions. This a great opportunity to meet members and clergy from other ELCA congregations in our synod, participate in worship and prayer throughout the three days and feel the satisfaction of helping the mission of our church. To volunteer or to learn more contact Betty Sacia at 608.526.3506 or via e-mail: brsacia@yahoo.com.

Root Beer, Beer & Hymns

A spirited sing-along on Saturday, June 10, at Our Savior’s, 612 Division St, La Crosse. Part of synod assembly festivities, celebrate with friends old and new, support campus ministry, and drink good local craft beer and root beer!

Clothes Closet Needs:

  • Gently used swimming suits
  • Jewelry
  • Straight leg jeans—Youth, size 14

No more winter clothes, please! We don’t have storage space and need to offer summer clothes now. Thank you for your continued support!

Scholarship Awards

The First Lutheran Foundation scholarship committee has awarded scholarships to 10 high school graduates to help with their post-secondary education. The recipients are: Karli Breiling, Alexander Shupe, Cathryn Shupe, Nicholas Shupe, Cortney Christnovich, Tianna Rasmussen, Hallie Schmeling, Zachary Thomas, Alexis Marcon, and Mallory Thies. Each will receive $300 through the Mabel Anderson Scholarship program. The money is awarded after the recipient submits his or her first-semester grades.

Wisconsin Dells

First Lutheran families are invited to Noah’s Ark in the Dells on Saturday, June 10, from 10am-6pm. Cost: $18, includes hot dog lunch. Though this is a youth event, it will be more like a family outing. If a youth absolutely can’t be accompanied by an adult, contact katie@firstlu.org to work something out. We want everyone who would like to come to be able to participate. RSVP to katie@firstlu.org.

Helping Hands

Announcing a new ministry at First Lutheran called “Helping Hands!” If you need help with small jobs around the house such as: changing batteries in a smoke detector, or in need of a couple of meals delivered to your house because of a medical condition, or changing a light bulb, or groceries delivered to your house etc.. Just go to the “Helping Hands” board by the family bathroom and make out a slip with a description of what you need help with and your telephone number. Then anyone who thinks they can help out can take the slip and call the number to work out the details. This ministry is open to all in need of help, and to those who can provide the help. There is no set group of “helpers” so we need involvement from all who can be a blessing to someone else. Let’s pray this ministry will be a shining example of “God’s work, our hands!”
