Middle School Service Sundays

THIS Sunday, Oct. 28, 4:15pm: RAKE and RUN, followed by dinner and youth group. Please dress weather appropriate and bring rakes if you have them. RSVP for numbers to Karissa: 608.790.2590.

Sunday, Nov. 4: QUILTING during regular scheduled youth group. We will be assisting with the quilts that are made and sent out to those in need.

Young Youth: Faith is Like a Pumpkin

Our Young Youth (K-Gr 5) find out how faith is like a pumpkin! Sunday, Oct. 28, 6pm, in Fellowship Hall.

Sabbatical Together: Genealogy 101

Genealogy 101, Tuesday, Oct. 30, 6:30-7:30pm. Genealogy, also called family history, is the tracing of a person’s ancestral lines. The best place to start any genealogical quest is with the present, the person you know best — you! Learn how to begin this journey into your own family’s history. Intended for beginning genealogists or for experienced genealogists who want a refresher on some topics, including: interviewing relatives, vital records & censuses, citing sources, and memorializing your findings.

Family Photos… a Cloud of Witnesses

Help us create a visual cloud of witnesses for All Saints worship on Thursday, Nov. 1,
at 11am.
We are looking for pictures of loved ones who have died, not just this past year. If you had a loved one die this past year (Nov. 1, 2017–Oct. 31, 2018) and they were a member of our congregation, a letter has been sent to you with a special request. We also are looking for pictures of those who have been baptized this past year. Pictures should be 4x6 and copies that you don’t need back. You can either email pictures to kathryn@firstlu.org or drop them off at the church office. Please submit them by Oct. 29. Thanks for your help in creating our cloud of witnesses.

OWLs Fly to Almost, Maine

On Thursday, Nov. 1, the OWLs, a group for those 55+, will fly to see the romantic comedy “Almost Maine” at the UWL theatre. We will meet at church at 4:30pm, travel to a local restaurant for a delicious supper and then to the play at 7:30pm. Cost: $16; dinner on your own. Church Women United

Reaching for Wholeness, In Harmony with God’s People, Nov. 2, 9:30am, at Good Shepherd Lutheran, 4141 Mormon Coulee Rd, La Crosse. $5 brunch. Bring donations for Salvation Army. RSVP to Barb by Oct. 29: 608.784.0062.

Butter Braid Fundraiser

The Butter Braid fundraiser continues until Sunday, Nov. 4. Youths going to Sugar Creek Bible Camp or on summer mission trips can pick up order forms from the church office. All order forms, with the money, must be turned in to the church office on or before Nov. 4. Orders will be available for pick-up on Wednesday, Nov. 14, after 12pm. MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP: DONATIONS NEEDED

Our middle school youth group is looking for donations of drink mixes, snack items, desserts, canned fruit, money for meals, etc., along with a Foosball table, air hockey table, ping-pong table, corn holes, yard games, and card games. Donations can be brought to the office; contact office regarding large item donations: office@firstlu.org.

Peer Ministry

Starting Wednesday, Nov. 7. Peer Ministry is a great way for our 10th-graders to learn about how to deal with any situation that arises, large or small. It makes handling conflicts simple and equips them to be better listeners and be welcoming to those around them. Meeting most Wednesdays from 7-8:30pm at the house. 

High School Sugar Creek Retreat

This high energy retreat will be filled with music, faith-building time and fall activities! Cost: $85 (includes 5 meals). Retreat runs from 7pm Friday, Nov. 9, to 1pm Sunday, Nov. 11. RSVP to Pastor Stanton: jason@firstlu.org.

Opening: Childcare @ Church!

First Lutheran is creating a list of young adults willing to babysit our kids aged 5 and up, at First Lutheran, for $10/hour. The need for care providers happens randomly, mostly evenings. If you are interested, call 608.783.2236. 

Clothes Closet Needs

Winter is coming, and that means the Teen Clothes Closet will be giving out more hoodies, winter coats, gloves, hats and warm scarves. New or gently-used (smoke free) donations are appreciated, and can be dropped off in the First Lutheran entry way. Also, we need a heavy-duty clothes rack for winter coats, room dividers to create additional changing areas, and small old-fashioned travel cases or trunks to use as decoration. If you have any of these items to donate, please contact the church office. 

Other needs: toothbrushes, floss, colored jeans for girls (sizes XS). Thank you! With your support, we have served nearly 100 teens since moving into our new locations!

Drawing from the Well

Women of all ages are welcome to come together for food, fellowship and study. Starting Saturday, Nov. 10, from 9:30–11:30am, we will begin a 3-part study on prayer, using Let Us Pray, by Anna Madsen. Meeting at the house. RSVP to Bridget Crave: bridget@firstlu.org.

Faith Alive! U: Listening As a Spiritual Discipline

A Faith Alive! U course presented by Steve Spilde on Sunday, Nov. 11, 6pm. Explore practices that allow us to better listen and connect with our children, our spouses, our loved ones and our friends. Steve Spilde is the associate director of the Franciscan Spirituality Center in La Crosse and a certified spiritual director who will help us consider our own emotions and desires so we can be more compassionate and gentle with ourselves.

Islamophobia in Action

Monday, Nov. 12, 6pm, Cameron Hall of Nations, 1300 Centennial, UWL. Free & open to the public; come hear Dr. Louise Cainkar from Marquette University. This talk focuses on why some aspects of American culture promote Islamophobia, including through its history and media portrayal of

Muslim populations around the world. It also looks at the harmful impacts of Islamophobia on American men, women, and youth.

Blessing Retail Workers 

We invite all retail workers in our area to join us on Sunday, Nov. 18, for worship and a special blessing as they prepare for the upcoming demands of the holiday season.

Thanksgiving Eve 

In place of our usual worship on Wednesday, Nov. 21, members of First are invited to join in a special, ecumenical worship service on that Thanksgiving Eve at 7pm, at Onalaska United Methodist, 212 4th Ave. N.

Community Thanksgiving Dinner

This year’s Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be on Thursday, Nov. 22, from 11am–2pm at the Onalaska Armory. The Onalaska Rotaries are organizing the event this year and are looking for volunteers and donations. To make a monetary donation, send checks (made out to OEF) to: Onalaska Enhancement Foundation, Thanksgiving dinner, 415 Main St., Onalaska, WI 54650.

Advent Around the Table

Advent is a season full of rich traditions for both home and church. We invite all members of First Lutheran to join us on Sunday, Nov. 25, at 9:15am in Fellowship Hall for our annual Advent Around the Table event. We will create advent wreaths for our homes, chrismons for our trees, and advent calendars to help us keep the days of Advent. Along the way, we will learn more about this particular season, have great fellowship and grow in our faith as we kick off the Advent season.

Blood Drive

Tuesday, Nov. 27, 12:30-5:30pm. Every day ordinary people are saved by some pretty extraordinary people. People who give blood. Your donation could be the most valuable gift you ever give. Just ask anyone who’s ever received. Walk-ins welcome; appointments encouraged, schedule yours at 1stlu.org/blooddrive. Please bring a photo ID.

Baptismal Preparation

‘19 Mission Trips

During the week of July 21–26 in 2019 our middle school youth will serve in Duluth, MN and our high school youth will serve in San Francisco, CA. For more info & registration go to 1stlu.org/missiontrip.
